Woody

Woody is our handsome and quirky tabby boy. He’s outgoing and curious, constantly wanting to be right in the middle of everything that’s going on in the café. If you leave your jacket sitting around he will probably plonk himself down on top of it, claiming it as his own.

Woody came to us from Franklin Cat Rescue and has problems with his inner ear which causes him to be a bit off-balance and walk with a bit of a bobbly head. This is why we sometimes affectionately refer to him as ‘Woody the Wobbler’.

In addition Woody is also hard of hearing and has trouble following toys and people due to a lack of depth of perception. This doesn’t stop our fearless boy from climbing to the highest points to watch all the comings and goings in the café.

These quirks can make holding Woody a little awkward but don’t be deterred – he LOVES cuddles. The best approach is to be very flexible with him. He doesn’t like his head being held still so will lean it away from you and is generally comfortable in the most unusual of positions.

Lady Mary Clawley

Lady Mary Clawley is our beautiful blue-eyed snow queen and ‘lady of the manor’ here at BaristaCats and she won’t let you forget it! She can often be found snoozing on her ‘throne’ at the front part of the café.Lady Mary is deaf so she can’t hear you chatting to her and might get a bit of a fright if you sneak up on her but once she knows you’re there, she will demand pats and cuddles. She’s also always looking for the closest lap to curl up in.

As a dominant cat, Mary is prone to giving what we call ‘love-bites’. This is a fake and painless “bite” which is followed by licks and kisses – she does this as a way of asserting ownership and affection. Don’t be scared to leave your hand there. She is very gentle with the exception of her daily crazy period when her pupils consume her entire eyes and she demands to be chased around the café.

Mary was adopted from Paws 4 Life Rescue in Hamilton after being there for an extended period of time but now happily rules the roost at BaristaCats.

Tonks

Tonks is one of our beautiful tuxedo twin boys. The way to tell him apart from his brother is he is the one with the mostly all black face with a white patch on his cheek.

He’s the more laidback, well-behaved of the two and sometimes still likes to cuddle up to his surrogate mum Hamburglar (even if there is often a bit of forced motherly love on Hamburglar’s behalf!).

You’ll often find Tonks hanging around in a cat hammock or following his brother and Hamburglar around as part of the Trio of Trouble. He also likes to hang out in boxes if there are any lying around.

Tonks loves naps but do take the time to seek him out and give him a chin rub – he’ll love you for it.

Tonks came to us with his brother Bandit from Franklin Cat Rescue at 3 months old and we can’t believe how big he has grown!

Bandit

Bandit is our long, lanky and charming tuxedo boy. He is the one with the white stripe on the nose so it looks like he has a mask on (hence the name!). He is quite often found sitting at the front desk helping us take bookings.

Bandit knows he’s one handsome cat and likes to push his chest out and show off. Don’t be fooled by his bad boy exterior though; he loves a scratch by the ear and can often be found causing havoc as part of the Trio of Trouble with his brother Tonks and surrogate mum Hamburglar.

Proudly living up to his name, Bandit is prone to stealing a straw or two so do keep an eye on him if you’re having an iced beverage. We don’t want him to have to do time on the inside!

Bandit came to us from Franklin Cat Rescue as a tiny 3 month old kitten with oversized ears. The ears have stayed the same but we never could have predicted what a big boy we would have on our hands!

Hamburglar

Our Princess Hamburglar is our resident ‘naughty tortie’ and possibly our cheekiest and smartest little lady which can make for a troublesome combination. Being head of the welcoming committee, she is usually the first one to greet guests at the door and loves to weave in and out of their legs as they make their way across the café.

Hamburglar loves people and cuddles which means she is normally quite happy to be picked up and snuggled. She is also one of our more vocal cats and will tell you about the latest drama in the café if you’re willing to listen!

When Hamburglar was 6 months old she unfortunately experienced a terminated pregnancy due to being too young to birth kittens safely. She never lost her motherly instincts and consequently became the adoptive mother of Bandit and Tonks. However now that they’ve grown older she has taught them some naughty tricks and the three of them form the Trio of Trouble.

Hamburglar came to us from Paws 4 Life in Hamilton after living the uni student life for the first 7-8 months of her life. Unfortunately the student party life taught her a few bad habits including a taste for human food so just keep an eye on her if you’re eating. No matter now cute her big, innocent eyes are, please don’t feed her.

Orson

Orson is our fluffy marshmallow who is the biggest softy and never really stresses too much about anything except how white and soft she can get her fur. She is generally very patient and relaxed with people. While not the most athletic and active of cats, she is a whole lot of fun when she is in a playful mood.

As she has a very self-centred outlook on life, Orson likes to think of herself as the queen bee of the group though Lady Mary might say otherwise! She’s always wondering why you’re not patting her. Even if she’s sleeping she expects pats and a snuggle!

Orson loves her sleep and you might see her looking very unimpressed when one of the other cats is sleeping in her favourite hammock. She’ll often sit as close as possible and stare them down until they move along.

Orson came to us from Auckland SPCA after being rescued from a house with multiple cats and many children.

Banksy

Banksy is the ginger lion of the house, often sitting on “his couch” all spread out, thinking he is the main event and that our guests pay to see him and give him cuddles!

Banksy LOVES belly rubs so snuggle up to him and give his tummy a good scratch. He may take a while to warm up to you but once he’s comfortable, he’ll stretch out and purr like a motorboat! If you’re really lucky, he might even hop on to your lap.

Coming to us from Paws 4 Life in Hamilton, Banksy has had a bit of a rough journey in life. Before he was rescued, he spent 8 months on the streets after being abandoned for a second time. He arrived at BaristaCats severely underweight, with little fur and badly infected teeth that had to be removed as well as horrible scabs all over his body and face as the result of severe allergies. He now requires daily steroid treatment and special food.

He has come a long way and is now a majestic, beautiful lion who has slowly grown to trust people again. He has a bit of a romance with Mango – the two are nigh on inseparable, often seen cuddling together. He has a big heart and won’t hesitate to offer a lick to any cat near him.

Golden Homie is our pretty tortie who is as sweet as sweet can be. She is highly energetic – those big round eyes are almost never closed.

Goldie is very intelligent and loves to play mind games. She might pretend she doesn’t want you around when she darts away from pats or cuddles but if you listen closely you’ll hear her purr which is a dead giveaway that she does love the attention.

Definitely one of the more playful cats of the group, Goldie enjoys playtime so grab a toy and watch her go! She adores her cat family and is most happy playing with her best cat friends, especially Miss Molly Snugglington. The two can often be seen chasing after a teaser together.

Goldie came to us from Franklin Cat Rescue who rescued her outside a bottle shop where she was left abandoned in a box as a wee kitten.

Mango

Our little round ginger Mango had a rough start to life before coming to BaristaCats living on the wild streets of Hamilton until she was over a year old. You might not be able to teach an old dog new tricks but you can certainly teach a Mango a thing or two.

Mango has adapted brilliantly to her new life here at the café and loves nothing more than to have someone sit next to her and scratch her chin. She is still quite wary around humans but do take some time to give our beautiful Mango some one-on-one attention.

Mango came to us from Paws 4 Life and was one of our first family members. She has become more and more social and cuddly since joining us almost completely wild.

Zuul the Destroyer of Worlds

You might hear Zuul before you see her. She has a funny, croaky-sounding meow which gets louder and more excited especially when she has “caught” and “killed” one of the cat toys.

Zuul is the most playful out of the torties and likes to let you know just how clever she is by snatching toys out of your hands and running away with it. She loves teasers with the tassels especially so bring her one of those and she will love you forever.

Possibly our most agile cat, one of Zuul’s favourite things to do is zoom up and down the shelves along the wall between the front and the back of the café. When she’s exhausted herself, she usually likes to take a nap on the bridge.

Zuul is a lovely natured cat with such unique and beautiful markings – we feel lucky to have her. She has become more and more affectionate as time has gone on and likes to always know where her humans are.

Zuul came to us from Auckland SPCA and we do not know much about her history prior to that.

Miss Molly Snugglington

Miss Molly Snugglington is a petite little tabby lady with slightly crossed eyes. We think she is the most unique beauty we have met! She has the most peculiar meow and is very vocal so don’t be concerned if you hear her crying – she just likes to talk.

At first, Miss Molly may come across a bit shy and skittish but once you get to know her she is the sweetest little ball of fluff you’ll ever come across. She is super playful, energetic and loves chasing after teaser toys especially. Sometimes she might even hold on to the end of a teaser and take you for a walk around the café!

Miss Molly loves sleeping just as much as she likes playing. If you walk past her snoozing in a cat hammock, do give her a scratch behind the ears – she’ll adore you for that.

Miss Molly Snugglington came to us from Franklin Cat Rescue where she met and bonded with Woody. When she arrived she was very shy but she has slowly completely come out of her shell and now it’s Miss Molly against the world…and a feather or two.

Our sweet little ‘tripod’ Jean Genie (or Gigi for short) is a loving, caring girl with a soft coat of fur. She is very talkative and chirps to let you know how happy she is.

Gigi enjoys holding hands and loves laps. She also loves to knead anything and everything! If she hops on to your lap and starts kneading you, don’t worry – she’s just checking if you’re comfy enough!

Gigi came to us from SPCA Auckland and we don’t know much of her back story apart from that she had a serious hip injury that resulted in a necessary amputation of one of her back legs. While this hasn’t slowed her down, she still has trouble balancing sometimes.

Bryan

Bryan is our ginger ‘fluffy butt’ boy who is as adventurous as he is fearless. He is a Manx cat which means he was born without a tail.

Though Bryan cannot see, he is incredibly clever and often knows when you’re standing right next to him though we ask you speak to him before patting him just to make sure. The only question he will have is “Why are you not patting me?” so do give him lots of attention and he will purr in appreciation. Like Gigi, he also likes to hold hands and is prone to giving kisses.

Bryan came to his forever home here with us after we met him at the SPCA when adopting Gigi. He lost both his eyes due to an eye infection at about 6 months old but don’t be fooled, he knows exactly where that toy you’ve got is at all times.

Wednesday

She’s lovely and she’s kooky, mysterious and spooky, altogether a cutie, and she’s part of the BaristaCats family! Wednesday is named after Wednesday Addams from The Addams Family as she came to us close to Halloween. Not to mention the fact that she is a black cat which is a common symbol of ‘horror’. However, our Wednesday is anything but! She may seem mysterious at times but this is mostly due to her old age.

Wednesday is approximately 14 years old and unfortunately she cannot hear you talking because she is deaf. So if you see her staring blankly in to a wall and she doesn’t respond to you calling her name, you know why!

Wednesday came to us from 9 Lives Orphanage after being found in a gutter with little life left to her. We do not know a lot about her past but looking in to her eyes tells us she has many stories to tell.
