About us

Located in the heart of Auckland’s CBD, BaristaCats mission is to provide a refuge from the hustle and bustle of city life for humans and animals alike. If you’re looking for a space to chill out, have a coffee and make some fluffy friends then BaristaCats Café is the place for you.

We are home to eleven fabulously furry residents, who love to mingle and play with our customers: check out Meet the Cats to find out about them all! Just like a regular café, BaristaCats serves delicious food and great espresso coffee – but with the addition of a cast of colourful cats that you can play with, get cosy with, and generally hang out with.

BaristaCats Café is situated at 95 Queen Street, Level 1 – accessed via Exchange Lane, just metres off Queen Street – and open six days a week, from 10am to 6pm – with the last session going in at 5pm. With limited entries every day, we recommend you book in advance to avoid disappointment:

Who are we?

It’s our love of cats that has driven our dream to open BaristaCats: to make sure that those who aren’t able to open up their own homes to a feline friend still have an opportunity to interact with some truly wonderful kitties. With more and more people coming every day to live, work, study and play in the Auckland CBD, we knew the time was ripe to open the doors on Auckland Central’s Cat Café.

Julia, the owner of BaristaCats, is an insurance lawyer by trade. The idea to open BaristaCats came after Julia fell in love with cat cafés on a visit to Thailand in early 2015. As a child Julia always wanted a cat, but with a very allergic father and a very anti-cat step-father cats were unfortunately never an option! So Julia knows what it’s like to crave a little animal love in your life but not be able to have it! Julia is originally from Christchurch, but has lived all over New Zealand over the years and has now settled in Auckland in order to bring a little cat-love to the City of Sails.

Dave, Julia’s business partner, is a singer, actor, runner – and also a lawyer! While more of a dog person initially, after learning that a “puppy pub” just wouldn’t be possible he has thrown his heart into this venture in order to support Julia’s dream. Dave is originally from Blenheim, and has lived and worked in Christchurch, Wellington, Sydney, France, Boston, New York and Washington DC before landing back here in Auckland. When not helping write cat welfare plans, paint walls and pick out our furry residents, Dave works in international arbitration.

Our commitment to our cats

BaristaCats is absolutely committed to providing the best care and quality of life for our cats. We have a thorough welfare plan that we have developed with assistance from the SPCA and our vet, to ensure that BaristaCats operates to the best possible standard at all times. Our cats are fed Royal Canin cat food, a high-quality healthy pet food recommended by our vet. For more information on our animal welfare standards, check out the Cat Welfare page

To find the right cats for our café, we work closely with Franklin Cat Rescue, SPCA Auckland, Paws for Life and The Humane Society to source the suitable kitties for the environment. We are home to several cats with special needs, who might have trouble living in less-controlled environments but who do wonderfully with us.

BaristaCats has also worked closely with the Auckland Council to ensure that the café is safe and hygienic for both humans and animals. BaristaCats is fully committed to making sure our café is a safe, fun and joyful place for everybody!
